What is accessibility?
Accessibility is making sure everyone, including people with disabilities, can access the content you are sharing. Accessibility benefits everyone by designing for the widest range of abilities and devices.
Why “a11y”?
“A11y” is shorthand for accessibility. The “11” in a11y represents the 11 letters between “a” and “y” in accessibility.
What is Siteimprove?
Siteimprove is the tool that UC is using to run automated accessibility checks on UC websites. Website administrators can use Siteimprove to identify accessibility issues and track their progress on remediation efforts.
What is alternative text, a.k.a. alt text?
Alternative text is text used in place of non-text elements (e.g., images). People using assistive technology such as screen readers depend on good alt text in order to experience the content and purpose of images.
What is WCAG?
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are standards created by the W3C’s Web Accessibility Initiative. UC Berkeley websites need to meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA standards.
